Easily manage the colours

Saal Digital uses an ICC-compatible colour management system. Colour profiles, which are embedded in your files, are recognised and taken into consideration during production. We will never make changes to your files or perform any unnecessary optimisation. This assures that your files will be processed following your exact requirements.

Important: Calibrate your monitor and, if image enhancement is enabled in your Saal Design project, make sure to disable it.

The optimal preconditions for your Photo Prints
It is essential to calibrate and profile your monitor to get the best colours. This way, you can already see on your monitor the result of the products.

What are the advantages of colour management?

Print previews are optimised with the help of your preset monitor and our colour management; "What you see is what you get." In an ideal world, this combination works so well that you notice almost no difference between the display on your monitor and the actual photo product.

But, this is only possible if all the standards are met in the image reproduction process.

What can Saal Digital do for you?

  • We ensure that the profiled machines work within a small tolerance by making repeated calibrations every day.
  • The condition of the photochemical process is checked daily in order to compensate for fluctuations before the quality of the photos is affected.
  • We have an ICC profile ready for each type of paper we provide.
  • Our machines have an application of colour management software that can read the embedded colour profiles and convert the image data for the reproduction of the right colours. For files without embedded profiles, sRGB will be applied as the standard colour space.

Attention: Please, always send us files in JPG format instead of TIFF, so that the colour profiles can be correctly recognised!

What do you need to do?

Lighting
Please, make sure that there is enough light in the room. The brightness and colour temperature should be kept constant and reproducible, if possible. Ideally, it should be a glare-free and shuttered room that is not affected by the changing daylight.

Monitor
The correct monitor preset is the most important precondition of colour management:

  • The brightness of the monitor should be between 90 and
    120 cd/m2
    .
  • The colour temperature must be set at 5,000 Kelvin (D50).
  • The monitor gamma should be adjusted to 2.2.

The monitor must be calibrated in order to display the right colour and brightness.

Monitor calibration with colourmeter
Professional, high-level colour management is not possible without the right hardware. There are plenty of solutions available for around £200. Some providers supply a colour measurement device and additional software with which you can create an ICC profile of your monitor. This type of device can be a good alternative to an expensive new monitor.
